THE CASED WATCH – THIRD REPUBLIC
(France, 1870–1946)
With the progress of watchmaking during the 19th century, the pocket watch
gradually became more accessible. However, it remained a costly object,
out of reach for the less fortunate. The beautiful model presented here reflects
both the prevailing fashions and the ongoing technical innovations since
the early 19th century: pomme-style hands, guilloché case, and more.
Originally reserved for luxury watches, these features spread, from the
Third Republic onward, to almost all models.
